A coworker of mine I've worked with for 3 years now had a secret he'd been keeping from me. I showed him my new saw purchase and he said his family owned a saw mill. I never knew this until a couple days ago. It's a pretty big name mill around here. I went with him on a tour of one of the older mills and it was mind blowing the equipment and such they use to process logs into all types of wood. He showed me the hardwood floors in his dads house which his dad made at the mill years ago. Such an interesting business to be in. I now have a fulltime "job" helping out around the mill (I volunteer). I love being around it after work. Just thought I would share.

I know how you feel. I mill as a side business....but by the time I figure my time and expenses its practically free. Just something I love to do, and all the interesting people you get to meet. Thanks for sharing!

I'll get some pics for you guys. The big log mill is rarely in use anymore as the business has gone more toward finished lumber, mulch and the such but they do fire it up occasionally. Most of the equipment is vintage from say the 50's and runs like a top still. It's pretty cool to watch it run.
