As a tractor virgin wading through the options, I'm getting bogged down in info I have only the slightest grasp on and am paranoid of making a bad call with what is big $ for us.
I'm wondering if there are any good folks on here with the experience, credibility, motivation and time who wouldn't mind earning some $ on the side to help people like me buy something? Is there such a service?

Come to think of it, the same could go for other things like chainsaws, etc, etc. Not that I need any more chainsaws, but there are plenty of newbies after buying advice all the time and would gladly pay for a buying agent's time/services for the peace of mind aspect alone.

Has anyone considered or discussed this before? Would it work?

Not sure what you're asking. If you're looking for a certain model and looking to import, I'll keep an eyeball open for you, and holler if I find one locally.

If you're looking for advice on a tractor, just throw it out there, and see what the gang comes up with.

What are you looking to do with it, most frequent task, what impliments are ya gonna be running, and that sort of thing, and hang on.
There's lotsa Farmbillys on here that might be able to help.

Both and a wee bit more ;-)
Got one in mind and another has entered the frame. Has taken so long getting to this stage I'm just about out of time to make it happen.
I just got to thinking today that there are so many ways inexperienced buyers like me could screw such a purchase up and there must be a heap of tractor vets who have years of experience they've built up that would be invaluable to us, if they had the time and motivation to help.

hello, I have owned a john deere 850 for 25 years and have many wood cutting attachment for it . A tractor with a loader to start will give many hours of work, and let you see what attachment will be worth buying. The amount of money can be the limiting factor but the right horse power can alot of fun to run

Yep!!

It's easy to go plunk down cash and get something that dosn't exactly fit if ya don't know what size you're needing. LOL!!
Used to be that between John Deere, Case, and IH, everything was covered and the local dealer could point you close.
Times change. Everything is Jap, Korean, or Hindi made and some both. It's nuts.

What are ya getting and which one are you looking at for a second?

Got an auction coming up, and might snag one I don't even want lol!!!
Price might be too good not to grab and use as trading stock.

Do ya need a low hour(300) 45hp, FWA, compact with a loader?
Shipping might kill the bargain though.LOL!!

Uses:

Primary: Firewood - winch/skid/forward/carry/buck/load
Secondary: Lifestyle - grade long gravel driveway, mow 6 Acres (taking about 3hrs on the ride-on at the mo'), a few fence /deck posts.

Targeting thus far:

40-50HP, 4WD (ag tyres, will fill 'em with rim guard or the like), FEL with decent lift capacity, also decent enough lift and lift capacity on the 3PH for weight of PTO winch+logs when skidding, skid steer quick attach FEL so I can have more choice with attachments at OK prices, regular bucket plus either toothbar+grapple arm added or separate QA brush grapple, grapple arm to be operated by existing FEL valves (maybe a switch on the joystick so it's all in an easy place - is that electric over hydraulic?), enough rear remotes (or one with spool) for TnT kit for 3ph, 6' flail mower as our grass is hardy, stringy stuff and we are not after a bowling green (Ag tyres are OK as it's only soft-ish for a few months max each year and the around house stuff can always be done with the ride-on (I think you guys call it a lawn tractor or riding mower up there), pto winch to math the tractor and have the most drum capacity wit least loss of pull from empty to full as possible and not so heavy that it consumes so much of the 3ph lift capacity that I'm left only skidding out one log at a time. torn between low CoG and good clearance while working in the bush/woodlots many of which are hilly. Skid pan would be handy as would covers over the tyre stems. FEL couplings will need to be the flat face skid steer for the attachments, or could I get away using adapters? No cab, no canopy (will fix something to the -essential- ROPS later if need be). chains would be nice for when needed.

New or low hours and parts available here in NZ or Aussie.

Did I miss anything or are there glaring mis-matches or screw up in requirements?

When needed : a month ago already!

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

**edit** something that's compact and manoeuvrable/nimble in the woods but will revel in a hard life filled with purpose without much (if any) pampering and won't fall apart or fail when not abused beyond the nature of the work asked of it and the terrain it'll be on.

Oh is that all?:msp_scared:

Does it make sense to spend big $ on a tractor thats going to clock up hours lawn mowing?

Your trying to get a the perfect climbing, firewood and felling saw in one package. Throw 6k at a orchard tractor for the mowing, 15k for a skidder and get an FEL fabricated onto it. (heck I dont even know if it can be done, but there is little on this earth cooler than a skidder)
