Hiya Fellas,

I was thinking of maybe trying to do some local ISA climbing competitions next fall, and wonder what you guys do for training. I climb about four days a week, right now, and want to get good and not come in last place if I can help it.

I've seen the competitions on youtube and what not, and boy it looks cool. Right now, I climb for work, and then I run and do rock/ice when I can get out but I know it's a different bag and I don't think I could race around like those guys their real pros! But, I'd like to get good, so what do you fellas recommend for training.

And don't say a whiskey and some cigars to get you fit after work cause that's not constructive tho it works for the old man.

Thanks!!!

Whiskey and cigars are a big no no. Marlboro Reds and dark beer are the secret. If you are climbing now don't sweat it. Just go and have fun. You won't finish last unless the women's group is really tuff.

im not a really experienced climber but i have competed in mixed martial arts events, triathlons, swimming meets and biking events (dirt and road). when im doing the physical training for any event i think about the muscles being used for that type of activity. cardio is a huge factor no matter what your doing so dont underestimate it. if you really want to be competitive i would suggest 3 exercise routines on a rotation. 1st day would be back rows, roman squats, curls and bench press. 2nd day would be leg press, calf raises, quad extensions and 4 way lunges. 3rd day would be a 5 mile bike ride, hanging leg raises... basicly just cardio and core work. 4th day is a rest and heal day. if youve got any questions message me, my lunch break is over. good luck man!

Dude, Go to one of the Comps and allow yourself to be you, just the way you are. Compete if it feels right.

I used to go to an indoor bouldering competition (Cave Rave) every year in Northampton Mass. It kicked ass to be in there with those freaks that could climb my AZZ into submission. I didn't compete, I just climbed what I could and I had a ball. I wish they still did it.

Trad leading and Tree climbing are similar in the responsibility department, but the mental game that goes with Trad leading (when your pushing it), there's little that can touch that one.

Thing about being in a tree with a chainsaw is the whole thing MOVES. The whole damn tree moves... That messed with my mind for the 1st 90 minutes.

Rock'z are pretty stationary. I like Rock'z.

As for training: Visualize completing the competition with a huge smile on your face.

:yoyo:
