Over on the residental forum I realized that I have been mis-identifying a honey locust as a black locust. This I do not like!
As I dont mind not knowing every single tree (yet). But I do like to be right about the ones I do (OR THOUGHT ) Is there a really good book out there? If so does any one know were I can buy one? As I wont order online.

ISA has some good reference materials available. I recommend Michael Dirr's Manual of Woody Landscape Plants

I'll second the Dirr book in the Eastern US. It is a little weak on some trees in the west. Does anyone know a good book like this for the Western US?

There are several good dychotomous keys out there. Some I have seen are regional.

I think these are better then Dirr for field ID's. You have to have a good idea what you're looking ofr for Dirr to be any good. And it is like four inches thick. Take up alot of truck space.

Just in case, a key is a yes/no decision tree that asks questions "Is the bud pubecent?"

Here is a search I made, there are some books listed. most hits for keys were web page atempts.
