I’m curious, what do most tree companies do with the sections of trees they don’t throw into the chipper?

My brother, who used to own a landscape company, said a lot of local services are always looking for places to dump trunks but I have a hard time believing that. I was under the impression that they’re still able to sell them for firewood, especially in my area (eastern, MA).

Does anyone have experience with this?

Thanks

I dump mine in a hole in the woods if I cant find anyone who will take it for firewood. Aint got time to mess with firewood myself.

I give it away for firewood, have a yard where I stockpile it for firewood and we have a green waste dump where I dump it if it is closer.

Dump hardwoods at people's houses, dump softwoods (poplar, pine, maple, etc) at a mulch yard, it gets sent through a tub grinder and sold as mulch.

Thanks for the info, guys.

Any suggestions for working with some of the local companies? I was just going to start by emailing some of the companies I'm familiar with, but if there's a better way I'd love to hear it.

Thanks again -

If your looking for free firewood you might want to do a search for it with the search feature. I know we had a thread for tree services to post if they were offering free firewood. Might have to spend a little time reading through it though, as I remember it was several pages long.

Around here, we have stump dumps that take the stumps and large refuse wood, pine and dirty brush that isn't going through the chipper. We bury it in huge pits, 3-4 acres, for a number of years mixed with dirt and compost debris like grass clippings and leaves and in about 5 years, it has decayed enough that it creates what we call wood loam. The pit screens out the undecayed wood and rocks and debris and whats left is a nitrogen rich but acidic soil. Add some lime and its just about perfect.

Just a thought but If you have anyone you know in your area that manages a fishery, decent size ones make a good habitat. But then again you have to have someone that is willing too and knows how to float them and drop them.

Kinda off the handle maybe but Ive seen it done.

Haul it to the dump, give it to the log man, give it to firewood folk, leave it there.......it's not hard to get rid of it.

The company that I'm going to be working for sells them to different markets. Log home builders, hardwood dealers, etc.

we separate the wood from chips. all the chips get leveled out. all wood goes to a separate pile and gets split and sold for firewood. have 6 acres full of the s***. anybody want any?
