No photos, folks... sorry. I was too busy cleaning up to go get the camera. I'll see if I can get out there tomorrow for a snapshot.

There was a lull in the rain today so I figured I'd get some work done. Was felling a 19" red maple, it went where I wanted. But on the way down it sideswiped another, smaller maple. I kinda figured it might. It's pretty close quarters out here.

Anyhoo, the sideswiped maple was rotten at the base, darn carpenter ants. It broke and fell across the road. I didn't know the tree base was rotten. There was no outward evidence of it.

Thankfully, there were no cars going by when it fell. My first thought was aw hell... if a car runs into that tree... or some eager beaver calls the cops, I'm gonna be up the crick. :msp_scared:

I grabbed the saw, hustled out to where the tree was laying and started cutting off the brush, pulling it out of the way. The tree top just covered the eastbound lane. I got that cleared and the lane open. Meanwhile the westbound lane was backing up and folks were driving around it.

A Good Samaritan came over and started dragging brush to the side. "You keep cutting" he said. "I'll clear this stuff." Within a few minutes we had the other lane open. I thanked him for his help and went back to work cleaning up.

Took me over an hour to get all the brush out of the ditches, chained and dragged back to the woods. Then another hour or so to cut and load all the bigger pieces and cart them to the splitting pile. All that was left was some sawdust on the westbound berm.

Then it started raining again. I decided I'd had all the amusement I could stand for one day and called it a day's work.

Be careful out there, my friends. You just never know. :)

No one setup lawn chairs and watched... oh wait, you're not in the South

Got a break in the rain earlier so I got out with the camera. :)

Uh, road and "paved road" mean two different things, you didn't say it was a paved road.

I'd be sweating bullets too,

Aw man, these people drive like maniacs through here. The limit is 50 and we're at the edge of the 40 mph drop. No offense intended to our Maryland neighbors, just sayin'. :D

Weekends here are notorious for wheelie biker stunts. Kids and their crotch rockets. I've seen 'em roaring by on the hind legs many a time. If one of 'em came through when that tree was on the road and hit it, I'd be in the chits.

No offense taken. Marylanders complain about PA drivers, so I guess it's all relative...

Situations like that are when having 4low and a good chain are for. Or forget the wood and run like hell lol.

man, you need your story straight before you start cutting "Dang driving by and this ole rotten tree was a-leaning so far over the road a snake couldn't get under it. Jiss doing my civic duty and all"

Thanks guys. :)

No rain today... I got out with the saw and bucked them trees. The one that fell on the road, the trunk was partly buried. Had to roll it out with a cant hook to cut it up. But it's done, at least. It's more wood than we'll need to finish up the stacks. We'll find a home for it.

Will leave the rounds in the woods for now. The rain has pigged up my path. I just know I'll get stuck if I try to cart them rounds outta there this week.

Had that been me, there would have been a dozen council officers in their irreplaceable vintage cars on a weekend jaunt driving by just as the tree fell free from the high voltage main transmission power lines it got hung up in. You are one lucky lucky. Talk about adding some spice to your day!
