Tree I.d. needed. thought it was black walnut..

It has to be elm. I don't know of any other tree with leaves like that. The new growth of the twig makes them look compound, but they are actually simple, alternate leaves. The grain of the wood looks like elm, and the color could come from mineral streaks. Very nice pieces of wood. Glad you decided to see what was inside. The easiest way to confirm is to cut a clean area on the end of the wood so you can get a good look at the end grain. Then compare to the end grain photo here: American Elm | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Hardwoods)

Nothing else looks anything like it.

Interesting . I never gave elm a thought. It could possibly be slippery elm,
because after I sprayed the dust off with water the slabs were very noticeably "slippery"
