Sure looks like a pear to me, maybe Bradford.
I agree, and it is a pretty good sized one! Burns really nice, throws good heat, a lot of it around here in PA., only problem is it is fragile and breaks quite often in storms.

It's doing no harm where it is. It is a fairly large one. I've cleared out a number of trees here - it's my in-laws property. We call it "Shady Oaks" due to the many oak trees and abundant shade. I've been thinning things out so the grass can grow better.

It's very existence is doing harm. Plant a native oak.

I have one here in my yard, the dear eat all the pears most of the time. Make's em sweat.

The only thing that makes me think it might not be a pear, is that it's upright. Most of them that get that big usually just break apart and fall over. Good burning wood though.

Bradford pear. They plant a lot of them down here as ornamental's. Yes they do break very easy but we rarely get broken limbs during a storm.
Snow or ice loads would destroy them in a cold climit. They grow fast and have beautiful white flowers in the spring. Very fragrant when blooming.
No reason to take it down unless it's causing a problem. They dont get very big and that one is about as big as i've seen them get.

I took one down that was about twice that size on the stump but it had a 7-way split up about two feet. By far the biggest I've ever seen. Heck, I never even knew we could grow them in MN let alone one that big. It was a rotten old tree that had suffered many previous failures. None of the 7 stems were over 14". That was the first and only one I've seen in my area

I have a Cleveland pear on my side yard that is similar to the Bradford. It's 31 years old and lost a huge piece after a spring thunderstorm last year. I've got a rope holding the rest together. It might last five more years but that's about it. Beautiful tree, but limited life. The firewood is fabulous, judging from what it lost.
