I've seen some linden that look like that mainly ones that grow in the woods. Any pics of the rest of the tree?

Edit: also the spots on the trunk, whatever it is, I have not seen on ash while I believe on the 20 truck loads of wind blown linden I pulled out of the woods this fall it existed

I'm thinking ash??

Or possibly box elder... I think ash too, but look at this box elder. http://maple.dnr.cornell.edu/kids/tree_box.htm

If the wood shows pink or red staining, it's boxelder...

As mentioned, a pic of the whole tree, or maybe the twig would help. The closeup of the bark actually makes it tougher to ID. It could even be a tulip poplar...

ash is easy to spot in the woods it has opposite branches, it can be easy to confuse it with mature tulip poplar
