Ding ding! It is red maple. Although it's one of the shaggiest I've come across. The nearest red maple barely had any scales on it. Go figure.
 
There's a red maple growing in the woodlot looks exactly like that. Shaggiest maple bark I've ever seen but the leaves don't lie.
 
I knew it was maple but all the wrong answers had me double guessing myself . My grandparents old farm had giant majestic maple trees and they had real shaggy bark like that

I can offer limited info on this one, but have never seen something like it, help me out as to what it is(specifically, I know the basics like a tree lol and the leaf type) or what causes it.
