After the snowstorm here a few weeks back I cut up a downed limb nearby and threw it in the truck. Finally split it today. Really nice looking wood, fibrous grain like oak (if that’s the right description), as opposed to more smooth grain like poplar or maple. I was really surprised at how heavy it was. Thanks!

Thanks for the response, Chris. That was my first thought but the bark seemed different, like a darker brown, to me. The tree is on the edge of the woods, undergrowth with large trees above. A house is nearby, but not in the yard. I’ll try to get more pictures and look for any other growth, buds, etc.

Looks like it ( Might ) be Eastern Redbud.
( Cercis Canadensis )
That makes sense. I went back to where that tree was and there was another with similar bark, but I couldn’t tell if it was the same bark or not. That similar tree had seed pods which also had me thinking redbud. I just couldn’t tell if they were the exact same tree, but I think they are. This is a picture of the similar tree. I think the bark from my first post matches this tree, right? And the seed pods would confirm redbud.
