Two trees in the same stand of many, but out of place in a generally different forest in southern New England. None other like it in the entire state forest.
Soft needles and small tight cones, all way up in the sky. No intermediate branches below the crown.
Some type of Pine, but which?

How many needles to a bunch? And are the needles short or long? Also, scrub pine is just slang for a variety of pines.

I think this is representative. Really can't see so far up but this was on the ground in the area.
Long soft needles like a white pine.

Cones were very compact with a single sharp prickly point at the bottom outer edge of each wing.

Most likely Pitch Pine. I can see needles in bunches of 3. They have tightly wrapped cones as well.
