Hello,
I’ve got what I believe is a sumac tree (correct me if I’m wrong) at the edge of my yard that I’d like to grow into something unique and interesting. It’s been damaged in the past (as you’ll see in the photos) and has only recently begun to sprout new growth. I was trying to clean up some of the dead wood, and I accidentally peeled off some of the thin bark at the base of the main live branch, exposing what I believe is the sapwood underneath (see photo). Will the branch and tree as a whole survive this? Or should I do something to help along the healing process? I wouldn’t worry much if it were a smaller secondary branch, but given that this branch is by far the main contributor to the tree right now, I’d like to do whatever I can to keep it healthy, if necessary.
