 What does this marking mean? It's on a 20-22" dia. cherry and I'd like to cut it right. Does it mean to cut from the line up (for saw logs) because the base is bad? The base looks fine to me- I guess I'll find out when I open it up.

As long as I'm asking-- is this tree worth cutting? It's also a cherry little bigger in diameter but :dizzy: has so many twists and turns it'll be hard getting 8' logs out of it. Thanks Rick

Sorry the pictures aren't too good.

The first one looks like it has been marked to remove the sweep from the butt log. The second tree is firewood or fuel chips.

tree marking

for the first tree i would be looking for fence or wire in it somewhere...the second one?:dizzy:

Yep....in the first one it is either wire in it or it is to remove the sweep off the butt log. The second tree is a firewood tree to me...it's one i'd leave standing......... Around here we use blue tree paint either flourescent or regular blue tree paint....Rudd is popular around here. I use two dots about chest height one above the other, and one down on the stump.....on both sides of the tree.:greenchainsaw:

Thanks gentlemen  I'll be leaving the second one. The first one I'll cut, the bark is starting to peel off 30 or so feet up. I don't think there is any barb wire in it.

i still think u might need to look close as that first tree...there may not be any wire visible....and i may be wrong...but be careful when cutting it...either cut it really low or high..

right here is where i would be looking for wire, notice there there is a horizontal "band" of bark that might signify that the tree has grown into wire...but then again it could be wind shake, look at other trees in the area that might signify a fence line....ive been wrong many times..but just keep that in the back of your mind when u are cutting
