Its been centuries since I did a tree value report. My training and experience pertained to landscaped lots in the city.

An attorney called today, about potential tree loss on several acres, related to a fire.

He said the other party had a non-arborist (non horticulture) person estimate tree values based off DBH and the formula seems to have been the same, regardless of tree.

Apparently, there are several types of genus involved - I'm guessing Madrone, Douglas fir, oaks - and then some.

I told the attorney, that he would probably not want to need the route of estimating individual trees, in the dozens.

If a lot is not timber land, would it be reasonable to estimate tree value similar to a yard around a home?

I would have to think that he should get fair timber or stumpage price for it regardless if it is timber land or not. Unless the trees where grown for resale for transplant. if he got more than that would't it be like me or you getting an extra 10000 on that special car that got recked just because it had sentimental value? I may be wrong but Justice should be fair for everyone............but that would be silly wouldn't it! of course this is only my opinion. not a legal one.

Mario it sounds like they were using Basic Value, a fixed cost per area regardless of species, site or condition. I don't think that one flies too well. Is a healthy 10" Japanese maple worth the same as a dying 10" willow?

Different species, different sites = different value. Timber species in a timber site may = timber value.

I've done appraisals with up to 100 specimens. takes a little while but usually worth it for the owner.
