I came across something called a "tress prusik" friction hitch here:

http://www.icicle-mountaineering.ltd.uk/skills.shtml

They say it's good for sliding over ropes encrusted with ice, etc. They also seem to say it's good because it grips the rope along its length, rather than jamming at one place, like a normal prusik or kleimheist.

Has anyone ever used this knot? If so, can you tell me how to tie/wrap it? I'm not sure I get it from their diagram...

Thanks,

CA

That looks to me like a VERY crude rendition of a Valdotain Tresse hitch (minus the turns at the top). Search for this knot to get a better understanding of it. It's a GREAT friction knot used a LOT in climbing.

Before the VT and MT there was a french prussik. It looked a lot like that, but was not made with a loop, I still use it for compression rigs, ssince it is easy to adjust.

I found it had too mucch play for a climbing hitch
