Friend of mine has a Husqvarna 254XP that is giving him fits. He's had the saw for a year or so, and it ran fine at first (he's the second owner). Now, it will only run for 5-10 minutes and then die, and it becomes next to impossible to restart (if you can start it). Its supposedley been worked on once by the local shop, but its still doing the same thing. Any ideas?

The first thing I would look at is the fuel tank vent.

Try to open the fuel cap and see if it helps, or run it with the fuel cap open......

It sounds fuel-related to me, but I'd take the muffler off to see what the cylinder and piston look like. If there's scoring, that's most of your problem. If not, then adjust the carb properly and check the fuel line and filter. I would also check that the intake stack is tight with no leaks. If adjusting the carb makes no difference, and the fuel line looks healthy (no cracks, and hasn't turned to jell-o) I'd rebuild the carburetor. I would also change the plug.

If that stuff doesn't work, I'd think about getting the saw pressure tested to make sure the seals are good.

Do some searches on this site, you'll find a wealth of instructions on how to accomplish the above.

There were a few smaller Husky models that were bad about the fuel lines
bending/kinking right before going into the tank, you might want to look, but
looking at the piston first might save a lot of time, and ruin your day.
