had some free time so decided to try making a a few slabs.
Standing dead Red Fir or Douglas Fir. Pseudotsuga menziesii
It was standing dead for a year or so. got cut down and the butt log sat for a couple more years before I got to it so it wasn't the easiest to slab but it all worked out ok. It had a bit of what I call wind shake
it wants to split along a pitch filled vein running the length of the slab so I decided to reinforce the slab with a 1X4 red oak board and some 1/2" dowels (we'll see if it works)
Sanded it and put some tung oil on it.
The 395 got hot while slabbing-- went through over half a tank of gas per 10 linear feet but all in all held up well-- I think the stock oiler was even providing just enough oil for the 42" bar I was using.
I have one of those huge 56 inch double headed bars in case I run across something bigger but think I want another saw to do a dual powerhead-- or a larger saw.. 3120 or ms880 to use it-- plus I think I need some sort of an adapter plate to make that bar work with the husky studs.. anyway milling is interesting, thanks all for the insight and information
I lurk here and you guys are a wealth of knowledge, thanks for sharing it!
