I'm looking for some thoughts on this stove. It is advertised as a 1989 Vermont castings vigilant. The guy wants $950 for it. Is it a good stove? Does anyone know the specs on it?

I know Vermont makes top quality stoves, but that seems high for one that old. I would think you could pick one of those up for $500 - $600.

Actually I did quite a bit of shopping around for vermont casting stoves this year cause my father in law got me hooked on his defiant. That's about right on what they go for. I didnt like the glass doors of the Vigilant. Can't tell you much about the Vigilant anyways but vermont casting made good Quality Stoves. I bought a 1975 defiant for 500$

"made" being the key word here...not so much these days...just a bunch a garbage

but as others have said $950 is awfully steep for that stove especially with the mismatched parts (plain black door) and the chipped enamel...they go for around $400 around my area

So, would this be a good stove for the next ten to twenty years? Wood is my only heat source.

i don't know about that particular stove...It looks like the top door has been replaced, making me wonder about the rest of the stove...things to look for are warped pieces inside the stove...
but yes that model/year stove is a good stove

There is also a Hearthstone II stove available for $900. Sounds like a great deal.

I don't own one,

but one of my wood customers had a Vigilant from about that time frame. It served well but was replaced a few years ago because it developed issues and parts to repair / rebuild were no longer available.

Other great cast iron stoves to look for are Jotul and Hearthstone.

Take Care

If I had a budget of 900 and wanted a good reliable heater that needed to last 10-20 years with modern reburn technology I'd consider a englander nc30

It's funny because I have just been reading up on the nc 30s and I'm pretty sure I am buying one tomorrow . It seems like a dream of a stove for my situation.
