I am putting together a cut list, but I am looking to get an estimate of how many logs I would need to get about 15,000 board feet of 2x6's, 2x8's, 2x12's, 1x8's, 1x4's, 4x4's etc.

I am planning on using logs that are 8-18' long and mostly around 20" diameter. Does any one know approx how many logs I would need assuming they are all say 20" x 12'??? I am just looking for a ball park. I have no clue.

Thanks!!!
Andrew

20" x 12' is 192bf. So to get 15,000bf you'll need 78 logs. I'd go 85-90 logs to be on the safe side.

There is even an APP in the iTunes store for this one....just thinking outside my head, in case you'd like to just use a phone at the site with the trees?

How long do you guys recommend air drying the lumber before building with it. Its hemlock that will be cut down this weekend and hopefully milled by the end of march. It will be stickered and stacked in a barn that is open on two sides so it will be totally dry and have great air flow.

Thanks guys!

10 minutes... I mill it and build with it and let it dry in place...

Not for studs or other construction lumber, for off the ground use in a barn or out building.

For finish it all depends? What kind of construction? Will it be heated/cooled?

It will be a stick framed large garage/barn on a foundation. It will only be heated when i am working on projects, maybe a few weekends here or there. 2x6 walls, 2x12 floor joists, 2" thick floor.

I would use PT lumber for ground or contact with any cement, 2 x construction lumber can be used right off the mill... I've had no problems doing this, as long as it's nailed into place and the walls are left open for a month or so to let the lumber dry in place. If a stud warps or twist later, cut it out and nail in a straight one, but i haven't had that problem...

Green lumber sure nails up nice!
