I saw some custom pens made from wood turned on a lathe. I'd like to make some for friends and family but can't find a source for the pen internals. I have found all the parts separate from each other but, I want to buy all the internals together.

Any help would be appreciated.

I would suggest the Vertex kits. They look really great and are easy. You only need to turn one piece of wood and only to one consistent size. Very easy in terms of pens.

Thanks guys for the help, I knew I could count on you to help me out, and I know, I know... pics or didn't happen. I will post once I get some made up.

In the meantime I'd love to see any that anyone else is doing.

I've been checking these sites and can't quite find what I'm looking for. I have the wood blanks and just need the internals, Can somebody send me a link of such a thing?

It seems all of the kits include the blank material as well.

Penn State stuff can be bought at >>>>HERE<<<< at a discount, and they will get to you before the turn of the century.
Better deals can be found at timberbits(free shipping on $80+ orders too), and they have extremely fast shipping!

The simple slimline kits probably should be your first kit. They are generally really inexpensive(under $2.50) and require just one standard 7mm drill bit. The single barrel pens like the Sierra/Mesa kits are also quite simple, and the wood section is short(easier to drill straight then some of the long stuff), but they will need specialized 'bushings' to hold them on a mandrel or between centers....

Typically any kit pen will be 'easy' to turn, it's the choice of the finish you decide that will be the challenging part!

Hope to see some of your turnings soon!!!

I ordered the Slimline pen kit and some bushings and a bit, but no mandrel. I guess I need to get one?

Yes, you need a mandrel. You will also need to make or buy a press to assemble your pens. You will also need to buy a flush cutter to flush up your tubes with your wood blanks or you could use a sander for this until you get one. Lastly you will need to make a jig to hold the blanks for drilling.

I have the tools to do the other jobs, but will obviously need a mandrel. Any suggestions for the 7mm pen kits?
