Hello all

Did a search on Pantin just trying to see if any new unusal ideas around.

Backround-

Using split tail system w/ taught line hitch Will be using newer hitches soon.First time for this climber

I know his body should be straight (like six oclock on clock) but he was on a angle (like 2:40 on clock) Very slow progress actually used body thrust more than Pantin to advance. Realize will take pratice am writing to see if I can make it easier for him somehow.

Thanks in advance

Kevin
40's on Long Island Spring soon???

Or even someone who had never used an ascender. Brian's reports on the Pantin prompted me to buy one. I haven't used it much but when I've needed it the device has proven efficient and super-simple to operate.

I think the Pantin is number one on my list of cool stuff to buy and try out. Usually I will either hip thrust up, or set my climb line in a crotch where I can actually foot lock on the single rope and advance my Blakes hitch up using a knot minding micro pulley. Using a Pantin would be so much easier on the abs and legs then me foot locking on that single rope. I have one ordered and it should be here monday. I will let you know how it works out.\

The Pantin works best with the smaller dia. ropes. A Blue Streak will fit, but doesn't slip through the device as easily as Yellow Jacket or my present rope the Acender. It also helps to keep the line straight below your waist, as you lift your leg up. I use my left hand just below my hitch to do this.

The only thing I've found to be a diadvantage to using it is when you try to step out and down to get a foot hold on a limb, you can't, because your foot is hobbled to the rope. The device only works one way. You just have adjust your climbing plan and know when and where you need to disconnect the Pantin. It is like any thing else just takes a little practice to get it right and fine tuned for your needs.

Rich, Tie your saw on the tail.

Actually it takes very little rope below you(at least with Yellow Jacket) to self-tail.

I have a pantin and climb on hi-v. it usually self tails about 6-8' up.

the chainsaw tied to the line Doesnt work. I tried it. as soon as you get 3 feet off the ground the saw is on the ground and puts no weight on the line. Unless of course im doing something wrong.

I too like the little gadgett. I dont use it a lot, but it is handy. I think its faster than footlocking for someone that doesnt/cant flk very well.

If you are using it in the trad setup, then when you go up, your tail goes down. Not to insult your intellegince tho.

If you are using it SRT, then it is just the stretch in the rope. If its that big a deal, preload your rope, then tie on the saw, so it stays off the ground.

Try running the tail through your chainsaw handle and back up and over your shoulder-that way you can pull the slack as it develops. Personally I have only used my Pantin for moving up in the tree where I run out of footholds. From the ground I usually use a ladder to access the tree (a la Guy) . Go ahead flame me but why make things harder than need be? on most of the trees I work In 10'-12' puts one into the scaffold branches. Throwing a ladder up for that (or even up to 25 feet so that accessing the crown requires little ascent) makes life easier.

If you are tied into your lifeline, while accending the ladder, then there isnt a problem with it, IMO. Even if the ladder fell, you would only go for a little swing, rather than a plunge.

This is what I wanted to know. How do you self -tail a pantin with only a few feet of rope underneath?

Body thrust or FL those few feet, or reach down and do it manually till it catches.

There are pros and cons to everything.

Especially if it's a prison crew that has been working for several years;)

I like your answer rocky! Let the tired climber think it through. I feel like the odd duck for once, I used one at my old job that my boss provided and I just don't like how the pantin snags the rope. I footlock even on a single line. I don't like anything on my boots. Then when I want to get my foot in a tight crotch it is in the way. To each there own.

I FL most of the time, the Pantin is nice in big silver maples and elms where there is a lot of up and down climbing.

I'll cary and ascender with me too for transfers and long ascents.

A buddy showed me how to jam a monkey fist into a crotch and traverce over. I used to have have the rope tied off or send for another rope to do that.

Today i did about six hours of training w/ a new guy to the co. he's climbed before, but pretty old school. I showed him some need new tricks, and one he likes the most was using the pantin on the tail of his ddrt body thrust tech. He liked that then i had him add a handled petzl ascender along w/ this and he was totally like i have to get these things....Awesome to hear....
