Tulip Poplar damage from scale infestation last year

I am worried That drought conditions along with scale infestation last year may have killed 5 Tulip Poplar tees around my home.
These affected trees have not bloomed this year and had no buds or leaves to date. I have also noticed small mushrooms growing around the ground around the base of a couple of these trees.

Also I have noticed the bark splitting on some branches.

Do you think these trees are dead, or just dormant?

We live in SW Indiana and had moderate drought last year.

Doesn't sound good. Awful late for no leaves.

Yup, Toast! Most likely stressed due to being improperly planted, then the insect attack with the drought finishing them off.
