Turn a 029 into a 039????

Do u guys think it is possible to put the topend of a 039 aka ms390 on a 029 aka ms290? I talked to someone at stihl and they couldn't really give me a strait answer. I know the MS 290, 310 and 390 all have the same body, but the guy was sayin the saws might have different ignition timing and accouple other things. Mind u he wasn't 100% sure, which ment he really couldn't answer my question.

I had a crushed 290 and a crushed 390 that were put together into one saw a while back and yes, the top end can be swapped between saws Not sure why you'd want to, except perhaps as a salvage operation, but it can be done.

In my experience, if you need more saw than a 290 then you need to get a saw from the pro lineup.

You also need to change a jet in the carb.

Funny you mention that, I am about to do the second one. 039 with a cracked tank assembley and an 029 toasted, no oil.
Pretty easy really.
