I work for the utility, Washington Gas, in Washington DC. The city is preparing Urban Forest legislation. We are trying to determine if there are any standards or anything related to the underground utility work we do in relation to trees. The natural gas lines all run underground. It seems like the whole focus of tree standards is above ground. Does anyone know of guidance for working around tree roots? How should this be included in municipal legislation? The utilities (gas, electricity, and phone) are seeking an exemption from the permit requirements in the legislation in exchange for adhering to standards. Are there any related to gas lines? Should they be created if not?
