How's this for luck?

We've all read the posts about trying to score free firewood on Freecycle. I've worked diligently for the past few years to collect as much free firewood as possible, and to this point have been moderately successful.

Well, today brought a new wrinkle. I was freecycling a TV that was occasionally on the fritz, and replied to one of the emails from a guy who wanted the TV. He came over and we got to talking. He owns a tree service and was interested in whether I would have any interest in free wood, since he'd rather not drive all the way to his dump-off spot outside of town when doing suburban tree work around here. Shoot, can't argue with that offer! Still have to work out the details, but it'll be a nice deal. I'm also going to get him out to do an estimate on some deadwood removal on a few of my oaks.

For Karma points I'm going to see about splitting/donating a fair bit of the wood, since between his offer, caseyforrest's landfill hookup, and Ed*L's offer to cut and season on his property, I think that my wood needs may be met!

I told my wife that it is settled: next year we retire the fireplace for some true wood heating!!

I'm not terribly worried about the size of the pieces. Heck, if they're interesting I might even mill 'em! What I am worried about, though, is what the neighbors are going to think of this...

It makes me wish I had more space, though.

Yeah, invite any pita neighbors to pay your heating bill, that usually quiets them down for a bit. Although a wood donation for their bbq or smoker usually goes a long way too.

Some great luck you are having with the free wood, keep knocking.:pumpkin2: :pumpkin2:

Nice Score! I talked to a tree service earlier in the summer and they did the same thing. They brought 2 truck loads full of wood, about 8-10 foot lengths, some up to 40" dia. All good stuff too. They work in my area occasionally, but their yard is about 25-30 minutes away, so they would rather drop it off close by then go to the next job. My neighbor has scored 2 loads of chips from them too. I think they assume that I have all I need because they haven't called in a while. I need to get a hold of them.

I have found tree services to be a good source, as well. The problem is that most of the services in my area have their own firewood operation so pickins are slim and you end up with some less desirable wood. However, I graciously accept whatever they drop off in the hopes of becoming a more regular "customer"

My problem with the tree service wood is too much of a good thing. They were pretty decent about cutting it off when I asked, but there is no "I'd like some wood". No, you get your entire driveway covered from front to back, six feet high. And we're talking rounds that are up to 4' in diameter. After renting the splitter three times and calling in all my buddy favors, I have two seasons of firewood (and some that still needs to split).

I'm convinced that if you get on the tree service list, you need your own splitter to keep up with them. Otherwise, they will bury you in their "trash".

The upside is, I've gotten some nice black walnut and oak.

I am fortunate in that I have enough room in the back part of our property so there would be no such thing as "too much of a good thing":givebeer:

By the way, that is an FYI to an SE Wisconsin tree services that are looking for a place to unload some unwanted wood.:smoking:

they guy called me before he dropped mine off. He kept saying "there's alot, you sure you can take it all" I assured him it would be ok. I cut it up and had it out back in a few days, then he brought load #2, all ash. That was cut and gone the next day, but he hasn't been back. I'm guessing he doesn't know how much wood I burn a winter!!

free, my favorite price

I have a local firewood/ tree service guy that dumps me off wood once in a while, usually 2 to 3 cord at a time. Gotta love it, helps us both out.

The local candidates were politicing in the area recently. Our Town Super is running for reelection. Saw the owb, my milled slabs etc, and asked if I wanted wood. One of the town workers, a freind of mine, says the super already told him to dump wood here. They say they get hot and heavy into it in a few weeks. Time will tell, but my experience is, the locals take care of the locals here. I expect to get a lot. I need to remember to tell them I need woodchips also. I have an entire 5 acre feild I can devote to wood if need be, to keep us and mom and dad in wood for a while. Gotta love it.

In my spare time, what little of it I have,I do mechanical work for two tree services. I get all the good wood I desire. In addition I've recieved some excellent saw logs, some veneer grade white oak and sugar maple.
