Does anyone have a breakdown on the times of the upcut in relation to the downcut in actual competition on the same piece of wood.

Frank

Hi Frank, although I am no expert other than by my own admission, it depends on the operator. Since a pulling chain, or down cut sucks the saw in to wood, and a pushing chain, or upcut pushes the operator back, it all depends on technique, stance and style. I for one like the upcut, since I can be pushed easilier than pulled, plus I groove on the resultant rooster tail, but I have to thank Ken Dunn for getting me involved in the first place, but then again, I always was a one hit wonder, and why wouldn't I be?

Since most of us can probably pull a chainsaw into the upcut hard enough to stall the saw (well, except for really big saws and small sticks), doesn't it stand to reason that times should be similar?

I'm with Gypsy John on this one...especially if you can line up to fill your buddy's windshield full of chips with the rooster tail...Heh, heh.

That make sense Mike, But has that been proven or not?
It seems to me that with a roller nose it would not be much of a factor. Also the oil goes too the top of the bar first so it seems that would be a advantage on the upcut. Unless some competition bars have a oil channel cut to the lower roller
end of the bar. It would be neat if someone with too much time
on their hands could prove it with some timed cuts. Or maybe they allready have.

Hey Onthehillintn, you're pretty smart, that oil thing makes sense.
Because I don't know the answer to the original question (or your's), I'll add this: the saw shavings get sucked into the sprocket area on the downcut, which will slow things down too. In the upcut, they shoot out and hit your friends in the face (hopefully).:D
