I just got the good news from Dennis that a saw shipped to him, via UPS, with special instructions of "warranty, repair and return" was duty free, as was expected after having sections of the Canadian tax code recited to me by a UPS representative, but did ultimately incur a $55 "brokerage fee" from UPS for the service of clearing Canadian Customs with my package. I immediately contacted UPS this morning and encountered three very shallow, smug, individuals, one of whom told me that it is my perogative to use a different shipper. Fine, I will. The final rep whom I spoke with made it clear to me in no uncertain terms that there is no chance of adjustment for these fees because UPS policy feels that they are legitimate and the tone of her voice made it clear that she would rather not be bothered by people like me anyway. Let me repeat, I had a lengthy conversation with a UPS representative concerning international shipments, and a brokerage fee was never even mentioned. As far as I`m concerned it`s "so long UPS" because of their arrogance and I`ve been told that the postal service does not charge a brokerage fee. Let`s face it, if UPS did not have a reputation for "losing" items listed as chainsaws in boxes that say Stihl or Husqvarna on the outside, I would not have even had to declare an insurance value and you also have to remember that you pay international shipment rates upfront when you send the package out. Sounds like double dipping to me. Russ

UPS

After they chewed up and stole parts off of my new 046 that rupedoggy sent me then tried to dodge the insurance claim nothing supprises me. Russ, I would really get nasty with them, threaten legal action, etc. The word lawsuit really flares them.

Russ, we call em' the brown clowns, I could go on for hours
about what we've had to battle over. In all fairness though,
Fud X ground was even worse. One verse of advice to all,
make sure you ship in nothing less than a 350DW burst rated
box. Single wall boxes are little better than nothing at all.

Thats wierd, I have shipped mufflers and a Playstation2 to British Columbia and never incurred a brokerage fee. You are getting the shaft

Tell them you got the price off of their website and it did not mention any such fees. Also call at a different time, maybe you will get an employee that cares

You know, I've never had trouble with UPS within the US, ever. Even when some joker shipped me a heavy, flimsy printer with no packing material, it was undamged. Everything I ship arrives on time and in good condition. One thing is that I always tell them I'm shipping old hardware or books so the drivers don't get any ideas.

Of course, every UPS story I've heard that involves Canada has been a disaster.

Don't pay the brokerage fee!!
I saw UPS featured on one of those market type/investigative type shows we have here in Canada. They claim that UPS does this all the time. Kinda of a money grab for them, as they over charge for the brokerage fee.

Brokerage fees and other rip off add ons

This is why my sister routinely drives to Massena, NY to mail business related items that are destined to US addresses (when she has the time). There is a different excuse for delays at the border every day of the week and it ain't only the carriers; customs officials on both side of the border can be anal as well. The money spent on gas to/from Massena equals the phone bills and stress of trying to deal with someone 400 miles away. And this is for printed matter!

I continue to be amazed at the slowness of doing business in either direction here in North America-in Europe you do not even stop at the border 2/3rds of the time, as is is a "Common Market" ie EU.

I have to wonder if all this bureaucratic tape is not the result of lobbying by the customs agents union and also by brokerage houses who want to protect their little rotten empires.

If my UPS driver looked half that good, I'd be shipping and ordering stuff daily. Unfortunately, my local driver has hairy legs.
