While browsing Madsens website, I noticed they don't recommend using ripping chain unless it is used with some type of milling machine. My dad has some x-large rounds of Maple that he has cut into (with the grain, reg. chain, makes sawdust) then tried to split with an axe (also tried a wedge) with no luck at all. Would it be alright to use a ripping chain on these rounds or just keep making dust with the RS chain? Thanks.:help:

Using ripping chain to bust down large diameter rounds is a waste of time, sweat and money. And it's really not that safe since ripping chain is designed to be used in a csm set-up.

The best and fastest way in my opinion is to leave the rounds on their sides and rip down through them longitudinally. You know you are doing it right because you create big long curly fries and it cuts about 50 times faster.

I just use a square ground chisel chain and cut about half way down the round (down though the end), then hit it with a wedge or maul. The Stihl square chisel is 10 degress and cuts as a rip chain just fine.
