Has anyone who is familiar with a Wood Pro AVP chipper/shredder know of double edged knives being used on it with good results? If so, what knives were used, custom made, ones designated for a different chipper, etc.? The original knives are single edged and tapered.

James,

The double edged knives don't help in the chipping of the wood. When one edge is worn, you simply flip the knife around to have a new edge. I might have some double edged knives available if you can get me all of the dimensions of the knife.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Dave for your reply.

My inquiry probably wasn't clear if some one isn't familiar with the knives for a Wood Pro AVP. I'm wondering that because a double edged knife's thickness is uniform except for cutting edges of the knife, whether it would work ok on a Wood Pro AVP in place of the original knife design's thickness, which is tapered or wedge shaped, ie. 3/8" along the single cutting edge side and tapered to 3/16"(?) along the opposite edge of a 7"long knife (x2 3/8"w).

Maybe the tapered knife design pulls material into the chipper in a way that a double edged blade wouldn't??? or some other issue? Given the cost of the original knives ($64 x 3), if a double edged blade would work ok, knife expenses could at least be halved if the cost of a double edged knife was the same or less. Hopefully this explains better the nature of my question. If not, let me know.

Hi James,

I understand better now. Are these knives bolted or clamped down? The taper on knives doesn't create better feeding of the product however, a sharp edge on the knife does help pull material in better on disc chippers. I don't see many knives that taper down through the entire depth of the knife. The tapering is usually done to create an edge on the knife and it gives you the opportunity to get them re-sharpened. If you could let me know if it is bolted or clamped, it would be greatly appreciated. If it is bolted, please let me know the bolt hole diameter, how many bolt holes, and the measurement from the side of the knife to the bolt hole center. I think I might be able to help you get a double edged knife at a competitive price.

Thanks,

Dave

Thanks again Dave. The AVP stands for All Vegetation Processor and is a single hopper chipper/flail unit. I'm attaching some pics of the knives to provide size and attachment context. The knives are not off at the moment to do more precise measurements. These are pics that I took a few years ago when I tried finding a second set to have on hand until I discovered the unique shape of the knives meant it wasn't readily available from various vendors, & discovered the costs.

Hi James,

The factory just called to get another measurement. They believe they have these in stock. I need the measurement from the side of the knife to the center of the first bolt hole. If you can also provide center to center from bolt hole to bolt hole, it would be greatly appreciated. You take such good photos.

Thanks,

Dave
