Or Aluminum Can?

Fireplace season has finally sort of arrived; not quite but almost. It's my understanding there's some cleverness to using these so the catalytic coating gets all over the flue.
I have a standard masonry fireplace that serves more as decoration than heating, and I have a log ready to use.
Light use, nothing crazy.

Do I want to get the whole thing good and hot first, or for the first burn (yeah, it's been this hot in Texas) should I just put the CSL in cold?

Usually you toss that stuff on a hot fire and burn it hot for a while. I'm not sure what to say on an open fireplace though. Surly the product has directions for proper use on it. The stuff I use in the furnace and stove is a powder, I'm not honestly sure if it really does anything, I've never had issues with build up in the chimney.
