Hello, ,
Been removing trees for 6 years now and decided to purchase a chipper.
What's the best way to change the knives on the Vermeer 1250?
Do I need special tools? I E feeler gauges?
Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated. My manual give a rough outline but I would like to hear from the hands on people on the best way to do this. I have four sets of sharpened knives that came with the chipper. Once again thanks for any help.

The first thing I do is remove the belt guard. This gives you a few more inches for tools and hands. the outer 2 blades can be removed with an impact gun. The inner 2 require a breaker bar. once the inner blades are broke loose I use an air ratchet to do most of the turning. the anvil is a pain because it wants to move while tightening. it usually takes about an hour (3 beers) by myself.

Mine came with a long feeler gauge that you put down from the top while another guy adjusts the anvil. There should be two nuts on the bolts and check and make sure the bolts arent bent, if they are order new ones from vermeer. There is one inner knife that is closer than the rest and that is the one you adjust from. Make sure there are lock washers on the two bolts for the disc cover and check them everyday, mine have come loose and it could of turned bad fast.

Thanks for the advice. I decided to take it to my local shop and watch them change them the first time .
I use them for maintenance on my lift and diesel one ton truck and grinder
so they only charged me an hours shop time and some new bolts.
I'm good to change them now.
Thanks again for the replies.
