Nice that you had a crew along, their many hands make lighter work. I'm often out by myself or with one other person so I end up having to underbuck those. Another technique for wilderness work.

We did that on some we could not leverage. Hard to do without 2 people.

We cut whatever lengths we could carry onto the truck. All the splitting was manual too.

I've found that for most people the hardest part of underbucking off an axe handle is sticking the axe. The younger generations didn't play much baseball or other swing sports and it shows up in their axe skills. But those things can be learned.

I was selling cordwood when I was playing little league. I could swing a bat many ounces heavier than most kids.

Kids then, were working after school or hunting/fishing and playing pick up sports games. Even coldest weather we were outside, made snow caves and were warm and happy with a couple candles.

I stumbled across a Forest Service bulletin that described how to sharpen one of those saws. You can probably do a google search and find it too. I found it interesting, but like filing a chain saw chain, it will take some filing skills.
