I'm at Guy's out on the East coast, doing some more ice storm damage work in Raleigh for the next couple of weeks. If anyone knows of a fun climbing area around here, I'd be up for a weekend or rain-day climbing jaunt.

This is a beautiful area. Last month, we had a chance to look around the neighborhood a bit, and saw some nice country. The trees are very lush, though some got knocked around by the weather. Lots of creeks & lakes makes for some pretty views, especially when the lack of leaves allows seeing into the forest for quite a ways. There are less conifers than I'm used to, so the density seems less.

The internet access may be spotty, on borrowed or library computers, so give a call on the cell phone, listed on the web page.

Arboreally yours,

Why is that gal standing on your line?
Is that some kind of new back up system? :D
... and why is she saluting you?

Since Kevin asked, that gal is April Oxman, my 11 year old daughter.

Read the story and see another pic of how Jerry Beranek & I climbed this 12' DBH Fir tree in the spring of 2001. He used the CO2 powered line launcher to set the line.

April & her brother Robert were our ground support for the climb, and she's shading her eyes, not saluting. The jug line is tied off around the trunk, and I had told her to get in real close, just trying to get her in the same frame with the massive girth of this major stick. The tree used to be the champion Douglas fir, until the top was broken off by lightning or wind.

There was some video footage taken of this climb, and if some more folks can get out to Oregon, a movie might be in the works. Any takers?
