Rich: Please send as an e-mail blast to certified arborists. Thanks!

To all ISA Certified Arborists:

WAA is hosting Arborfest on Saturday, August 8 at Erb Park in Appleton. This event will feature the state climbing championship. WAA will be providing tree related information to the public at our display. This year we will be hosting an "Ask the Arborist" feature along with the display. The purpose is to offer the public a chance to ask tree related questions and to most importantly highlight the professionalism of the industry and promote the Certified Arborist credentials.

We need 2 certified arborist for each one-hour shift beginning at 9:00 am and running through 3:00 pm. We need certified arborists with experience working with the general public. . .a good imagination is probably an asset since in most cases you will be working from a verbal description. If you are comfortable with tree ID and are familiar with the common tree insect, disease and culture related problems. . .we need you!

If you are able to help out, please contact Laura Wyatt at [email protected] or 608-267-0568 (day), 608-226-8329 (night) and let her know what shifts you can volunteer. All assignments will be confirmed the week of August 2. Thanks for your consideration!

It was on a Saturday last year and it was a great event with good public turn out. I think you are thinking about the year before last when it was in the Madison I believe. Are you going to be there this year? I volunteered last year and I am signed up to do it again this year. Lots of fun!

I'll show up, I do a little networking at those things.

They used to have them with the summer conference, then last year Sean G. told me that they revolted and broke the comp. off because the big wigs wanted to keep their traditional Thursday event. Sucked for people who have to work.

Last years comp was on a Saturday at Pierce Park in Appleton. You should consider volunteering this year.... its a great way to network.

I network by working through the crowds, talking to people i know and getting them to introduce me to new people. I already know a number of the people who compete, and having to stay at one station for a couple of hours does not agree with me .

Fair enough. Maybe our paths will cross there and we can get introduced to each other.

Good luck. I have never competed, just worked as a tech at it. It didnt take me long to realize that I wouldnt stand a chance in hell competing. What city are you coming from? I am from Appleton so I dont have far to travel.

I am coming from green bay... why dont you think you wont stand a chance?

6'1" 240lbs of not pure muscle. I might stand a chance at the throwball event, if I was having a good day. I am pretty sure I couldnt even finish the footlock event. But dont let me discourage you. I would like to try some day, maybe next year. I just wish they would start a "Jumbo Division" for larger climbers. Maybe we can convince Mike to start one next year. Who do you work for in GB?

The guys who trade the title back and forth are phenomenal, I've worked with some of them and they put a lot of practice into getting little things like sticking every footlock.

A number of years ago, one of them lost because he did miss one. That cost him several seconds, which pushed him out of standing for that event.

The only season I can remember a relatively "new" climber took it was when a "leader" dropped his handsaw and was DQ'd. (Hamm?)

What kind of height's do they climb and whats the record? Whats the classes, I love rope climbing. Long before I ever climbed a tree I got into rope climbing out of a necessity in caving. I didn't know they had races at arborfest thats #####in.

Men's is 15m record 13.08 in 2007. The old 45 ft was 10.5ish

Women's 12m not sure of the record time.

7.3 Scoring the Secured Footlock (20 possible points)
7.3.1 The event is based purely on time.
7.3.2 Contestants who do not reach the bell/buzzer within 60 seconds will receive no points.
7.3.3 The fastest contestant to the top is the winner and receives 20 points.
7.3.4 The remaining contestants’ scores are calculated by subtracting the fastest contestant’s time
(in seconds) from the times of each of the other contestants.
7.3.5 For every 1-second difference in time between those scores, 1 point (of the 20 possible points) is
deducted from the climber’s score.
7.3.6 No more than 20 points may be earned or deducted in this event.
Example scoring:
The fastest contestant (A) completes the climb in 0:12:49 seconds.
The second-fastest contestant (B) completes the climb in 0:13:32 seconds.
(B) 13.32 minus (A) 12.49 = 00.83-point deduction.
This contestant’s score is 20 - 0.83 = 19.17.
The tenth-fastest contestant (C) completes the climb in 0:35:29 seconds.
(C) 35.29 minus (A) 12.49 = 22.80-point deduction. This contestant’s score is 20 – 22.80 = 0.

So is 15m the highest climb? I really am much faster over a long climb. Two years ago I competed in a 120m mechanical climb and did it in 5 minutes flat, But I was wearing 3 lbs of clothes and harness. I am assuming you would have to have all proper gear saw and what not right? If yall really like climbing and have caves in your area thats a greatway to learn srt on some long climbs, Not many trees allow 100m climbs.

The 15 m is the competition standard, which is like 49 ft; it is intended top represent a common work climb It is done on an ANSI saddle with a prussic cord (or Klemheist...). Mechanical assenders are not allowed. Handsaw is required, because you have to ring a bell on the work climb with it. Helmet, long pants, boots, safety glasses
