Looks like 5 of the 18 speakers are from the real world, non-govt. That's a lot better than 0, but less than what it could be from the world of private enterprise. Have fun, JPS! Glad to see you got Chaney; he gave a good talk on bark at MAC-ISA.

I'm totally there man! We should have 20-25 students from my school and that many from MidState in Wisconsin Rapids. Hopefully we get a record student turnout!

Edit: Thought I'd add that in Wisconsin, students help with registration and managing the conference in exchange for a $30 registration fee. In Illinois, the fee is waived, but we're still working on that. :) We also get 2 free hotel rooms - but we still get extra rooms because 50 people don't fit in 2 hotel rooms. We've slept 13 in one room, but not 25.

Happens to me a lot too. I pick the one I want to see/interact with the most, and get someone to videotape the other one(s) or at least grab the handouts. I've tried bouncing from one to the other but that can be disruptive, disorienting, and disappointing if you miss the good parts.

Not every presentation can done for the whole audience; logistics call for tough choices and compromise solutions.

What'd be cool is if folks attending can write up and post reviews here and send them in to TCI mag or some other wider audience.;)

Most things are like that already, though. "Brainiac" presentations already/will soon exist in written form when research is published, etc. An Arbormaster presentation is available in many forms - written or video. I know what you're saying, but you could also by audio tapes a lot of conferences.

The best part of the session is at the end, when folks go up and corral the speaker. I probably take home more in those ten minute question and answer times, than I do from the presentation.
It's just the nature of the beast, the speaker often talks down to the lowest common denominator.
In climbing demo's, it drives me nuts when the speaker is about to present a new idea and there's one guy who notices he isn't using a tautline hitch, then the next ten minutes is spent teaching half the audience what the advantages of a blakes or VT is. Then when things are about to get rolling somebody else will ask what the pulley is for under thee hitch, ten more minutes.

I have one day of vacation left so I will probably use it for on that Monday and see the climbing show since I'm not up to date:( Do you guys think that would be a wise decision to see some of the newer equipment?

You will have fun and learn a lot.
People at these shows are so friendly and very willing to help you out. Not just the exibitors and speakers, the folks who go to these shows are all there for the same reason, information exchange. I have not met anyone at these shoes that won't stop and take time to show you what they know or answer questions.
Being out of date means different things to different people, but the more out of date you are, the more you'll learn, it might make your head spin.
I take a camera and when I see a new knot or something I know I can't remember, I take a picture.
Look for me (and other arboristsite members), it'd be nice to meet you. I could point out the other guys, and tell you which one to hide from.:p

JPS from what I hear you are pretty tall so I would probably look like a dwarf standing next to you Im only 5'03" I will find out next week if I can get off work to go there on Monday and check out the new climbing thing.

I've got off on february 2nd so i might see some of you folks there then.

Are you going to be there Sunday and Monday then?

I got a king at the Days Inn for less then $60 a night. It's just a block from the convention center. Queens are around $50.

Does anybody know if they will have some vendors at this conference? I would like to try some new saddles. Thank you

There will be a lot of them, so bring your credit card.

I'll be at the Alexander Equipment booth some of the time there if you want to talk gear.

If you cannot find me, just call the number below.
