i was wondering what a walnut log was worth one is 12' the other is.16'

allrighty thanks its roughly 18 inches in diameter i think it has a few small knots and its mosty pretty straight i got a mill a few miles from me i was just wanting to get a rough estimate

Most mills buy hardwood on the Doyle scale, but the International 1/4" gives a more accurate description of what is actually inside the log (add 15% if the log is to be cut on a band mill). Diameter is at breast height (DBH)-- 4.5' off the ground.

12' tall, 18" diameter = 147 bd ft Doyle, 170 bd ft International 1/4"

16' tall, 18" diameter = 196 bd ft Doyle, 239 bd ft International 1/4"

Between that and price per bd ft, you should be able to calculate the value. I've learned over the years that it is worthwhile to get multiple bids, if possible, and that it is best for the buyer to determine how to buck the log to length.

Good luck!

Unless your friends with the mill owner, they will probably turn you down. If you had a load it would be a different story.. I could be wrong though..

If they're in a yard and full of metal, the mill owner won't be your friend for long! Have you thought about having a mill custom cut it for you and air drying it to sell later?

For what black walnut it going for in Portland, I'd take 2 logs down on a car trailer, as long as they where over 24" and at least 12', and Portland is about a 230 miles from me. The best bet is to take pictures after you dump it and send them down to the log buyer, that gives them a better Idea as to whether or not you should waste your time with it.
