I want to get into doing some milling. I found this silver maple tree that a home owner had removed. I stopped once to ask if I could have it for firewood and was told it was spoken for (as firewood). The person I spoke with was not the property owner but said try back if nothing was happening with it. Now the weather is getting nicer and they still haven't cleaned up all the limbs, I'm going to inquire about it again and get the property owners name/number.

I was thinking that if I get the chance to mill this I woukd cut the trunk from the big knotty mess about 6 ft from the butt (on left). The butt is about 36-38 inches...

Any must know tips? Is silver maple a stable wood? The end is starting to check, its been down for at least a month, does it need some paint/sealant on the end grain?

I'd also like to know - I just bought an alaskan mill for the 076 Friday and I as well will also have some large silver maples taken down soon (very close to the house),

Doesn't seem like I will get the chance to mess with this unfortunately. The home owner is a space case and said it was spoken for, said the guy "needed it for his cats"... o_O To keep his cats warm... I could see there was no getting through to the guy. The best I can hope for is I run into the guy while hes cutting and I can ask if he would like to barter some cut firewood for the 6' trunk section...

I would cut the limbs flush with the trunk and them mill through them. Nice grain at those intersections.
