Several years ago I bought a 4X4 John Deere Gator. It was a junker with no engine, no seats, and 5 flat tires. But for $75 it had all the drive train(less engine), dump bed, brakes. The guy I bought it from said I could stick a 12 HP Kohler on it no trouble. The clutches would swap right over. Well, he never got me the clutches, and they don't swap. I just wanted to stick a chain drive centrifugal clutch on it and go. But every source I contacted said it wouldn't work and no one made a clutch that would work on a 12HP, that I would have to go to one of the torque converter clutch set ups. Buy the time I did all that I'd have enough money in it to buy a new one! Now from the thread here, on a 4 stroke mill, I found centrifugal clutches that will work. I contacted the distributor and they want to know all the specs, number of teeth, ratio's, etc. how on earth do I figure that out? I would just scavenge a sprocket of a mini bike or cart and if it made the thing move under it's own power I'd be happy. I wanted to use the Kohler because it has a charging system for the brakes and lights, and I had a couple of them that ran well, FREE. Any thought are welcome.

Keep in mind, some of the Kohlers "these" days are made in China.... I'm not sure I'd be too brand loyal if the one you are looking at is a china motor.

Maybe peer under the dash of an old Argo or Max 6x6 and see what they use. The old 4 stroke models are about 18hp I think, and their speed/power is comparable.

Another place to snoop for information would be under a golf cart or older 6x6 Gator.

There must be a gator discussion group somewhere where you can post a question.

Best luck, I'm dragging wood to the mill with an 84 Big Red ATC on chains; the gator might be a step up.

You might look at Polaris's PVT's. The pulley varies depending on RPM. The thing to look at would be the shaft size and if it is adaptable. I can tell you the PVT's are rugged and reliable. Mine is 400cc's and 4x4, and it will pull 800lbs besides the 4 wheeler. Don't know if you could make it work but it's a thought. Lots of parts on ebay. Good luck
