I have posted in the past about replacing this clutch. But now for the third time in a little over a year my clutch has broken apart. New clutch every time. The last time I put one in I had flywheel machined for brand new pilot bearing. The clutch keeps disintegrating and I can't understand why. I always engage at low speed and keep my blades sharp. New cutter bar.

Anybody have any ideas ? Could it have something to do with the crankshaft ?

When engaging the clutch you should push the handle and pull it back about 3-4 times. You want the drum/disc speed to be caught up with the clutch before fully engaging. Are you noticing any purple or blue colors on the clutch as this would indicate overheating? Are you adjusting the clutch when the handle becomes easy to push in? Check the engine housing and make sure that it's straight and not at an angle as this would create a lot of side load on the clutch which can be bad.

Hope this helps!

I think I found the problem. The end of the drive shaft that goes in the motor has a groove cut into it where the pilot bearing sits. This is allowing side movement in the shaft which in turn is blowing out the springs of the clutch. I've just ordered a new shaft and hopefully will solve my problems. Thanks for the tips Dave
