I've got an old Kodiak fireplace insert that I believe was made by Alaska Stove Company. I'm trying to find out the purpose of the brackets inside of the firebox. They are at the rear and toward the top. They are about 4 1/2" from the top and the side brackets are about 7" from the back. The space between the side brackets is 3/4".

My 70s vintage Arrow stove has those and a flat plate sits on them to direct the gasses forward before they go up the chimney in a effort to transfer more heat.

That makes sense. I thought it was some sort of baffle to divert the heat before it went out of the flue. Is it steel and how thick would it be?

Those are to hang your socks and underware on before you go to bed. It masks odors and in the morning theyre warm and dry.

Socks!!! What socks? You forget, I'm from the Ozarks.

So I suppose a BBQ plate is not it then. :hmm3grin2orange:

Maybe you can wrap ya spuds in some aluminium foil and leave them up there for supper.

i got a kodiak stove ....a plate sits in those brackets not sure what 4:givebeer:  :greenchainsaw:

Looks like its missing the flame baffle, which keeps flames from shooting up the chimney and also helps burns some gasses. I didnt see and type of secondary air around it, so I would say its the flame baffle. I just rebuilt mine and reinforced it so it wouldnt warp again.

Flame baffle for Kodiak Stove

I've got the same stove, with the flame baffle in place. It's got a turned up edge along the front side (so it baffles the flame more effectively, I'd guess), and looks to be attached to the back of the stove by a wide bracket, and of course the two on the sides. Here's the picture.

It seems to be a piece of iron plate - should be pretty easy to come by. I would get as thick a piece of iron as you think you can bend in front. Good luck!

Hey Fudd thanks for the information and photo!! That definitely answers my question. I really appreciate it.

I had a plate made of 1/4" hot rolled steel and installed it a while back. It is amazing what a difference it makes in the amount of heat that the insert radiates now compared with before without the baffle.

Ekka the spuds go in the ash box! I guess you all don't do much heat stove cooking in Aussie land, go figure.

I grease mine up with bacon grease and salt, wrap with two layers of foil and deposit deep in ashes for three hours. Best tater going, period.

kodiak stove

The factory plate was 1/4 inch, and mine warped. I replaced it with 3/8
If you do it right, you can slide the plate forward (wear welding gloves] to increase the draft to get the fire going, then push it back.
My Kodiak was combo stove, wood or coal.
I just replaced it with a quadrafire.
What a difference, night and day. The Kodiak is a real dinosaur.

How did you reinforce it?
