What is the definition of a skip tooth chain? I've got chains for my Shindaiwa 500 that have several links between the teeth, ( I got them from a guy who used to race saws). They cut well with this saw on the Alder I use and the real beauty is they are a snap to sharpen with so few cutters. I am just curious as to whether this is skip tooth chain and what are the normal uses and advantages of this chain over a regular chain.

skip tooth chain is usually run on longer bars over 32 in .......for 2 reasons 1/ chip clearance 2/ guy's useing wimpy little power heads that can't spin a full comp chain on a bar too big for the saw, most west coast loggers choose this set up.

as far as a saw racer giving you skip chain means nothing.........race chain is made from full comp not skip chain. if useing the right power head for the chosen bar length full comp will cut faster.......until you get to "long bars" 42 in's and up.......

i think.........

They also make whats called semi-skip, which is two cutters in sequence like a regular chain, then they skip a cutter, and repeat the pattern.
One big difference is when you need to sharpen, the fewer cutters the easier it is.
Another difference is cutting speed. In smaller wood, full sequence is fastest, in medium sized wood, semi-skip goes best, in large wood, full-skip sequence is fastest. What size is small, medium, and large? It depends on the type of wood, power of the saw, chain speed and some other things I can't think of.
Tell us what you are cutting and with what saw, and we can give you opinions on what chain would work best.

Real race chain is made with Full House chain. That is, there are no tie straps at all, just presets and cutters.

wanna bet? how much are you willing to loose?

Thanks for the replies.

I'm running this on a Shindaiwa 500 with a 20" bar. Mostly cutting Alder that is already down. As mentioned, the guy that made up my chains ran hot saws but as you said it would make more sense to have lots of cutters working for you if you have the power.
My wood varies in size but if I get into anything that approaches bar length I just grab my step dad's 045 with the longer bar.
I'm not too concerned with cutting speed as I have lots of time to cut wood and more wood than I could ever use.
I am interested in your opinions as to what chain you would recommend as being most efficient with this saw.

i'm not familiar with your saw, how many cc's is it? but i can't see running anything but full comp on a 20 in bar. but if your happy with the way it cuts and you like the ease of sharpening it , then stick with it.

Full sequence will be your best bet (regular chain).
I like Stihl chain. I assume your using 3/8 chain. You could go with RS chain from stihl if you're confident with your cutting. If not, RSC3 might be safer.
personally I run RSLK.
Here's stihls site:

What would the parameters of the bet be?
One saw, bar, and sprocet, two chains made out of one bag of identical pre-sharpened (for racing) cutters used to assemble two chains, one operator, and wood, all of my choice?

mike
this isn't about me and you, this is fact. ask rick if cliff helsel use's full comp or full house. ask dennis or tommy why they don't use full house.
get over yourself sometimes.........it's ok to be wrong:D

Actually KF, the full house chain comment was a joke only the old timers here would get.
There was a big shebang when a claim was made that Full House chain was the fastest. All the racers got their undies in a bundle. Heads rolled, members were banned, one guy came up missing and still hasn't been found.
You'll never guess who was at the forefront of the debacle...

Oh. I thought skip tooth was the kind of chain rednecks use...

Ken, FWIW the guy who wins most of the local races runs skip(and yes his race chains are modified full skip chains). Is he a world class competitor? No. But he is a cuttin' fool. You know anybody else who has blocked 30 full cords of firewood in a day?

2000 posts here we come:D

Nice picture Dan. Looks larger than 3/8", is it 1/2" or just magnified? From the excellent focus I'd guess that it looks like something Gypo would post.
