Or any other good reference?

Timber Framing Guild has a downloadable PDF that covers common joints used in early America. It's free but not much for hands on, layout or cutting.

The Forestry Forum has a forum on timberframing. The stickies have good info for glossary and tools needed for traditional joiner. Moderator there (Jim Rogers) is a first rate timber framer and forum is a great resource.

The TFG should also have some references/links to Jack Sobons books, also links to their forums

TFG also has good links to hands on workshops

The first book by Ted Benson is informative with lots of good illustrations, but he has gotten away from traditional style since.

For historical, nothing beats the books by Richard Babcock. Even discuses scribe rule layouts.
