What is the largest recommended bar for an 031 AV.

20" would be as long as I would go. 18" would probably be even better. I hate running a saw with too long a bar.

I think 18 inches would be maximum for all around use.

I don't like to see 20 inches of bar on a 50cc class saw. However, I also realize that conditions vary from hardwood to soft wood, and whether you are talking .325 or 3/8ths chain.

I actually prefer a 20" bar on 3 cid class saws.-Not because that is a good length to bury in hardwood with that size powerhead but because it saves some stooping and balances well on my saws. I also prefer 3/8s chain-mostly because that is what I run on the bigger saws and running 3/8s on everything simplifies things.

I use a 16 in the tops and a 20 when dropping trees. Always used 3/8 chain. Keep it sharp, don't crowd it, and make lots of firewood.

42 feet. If the establishment has a longer bar than that they probably are too snooty to appreciate you setting your 031 on their bar.

I's go with a 16" for all around use. It could pull something as long as a 24" if you had one really big tree to cut down before switching back to your normal bar length (if you used skip tooth chain).........but serioulsy, if you want to cut big stuff like that over the long term than buy, rent, or borrow a bigger saw. :alien:
