Hard maple could also be Black maple...which I suppose that wood in the OP could be. "Hard maple" is probably a better identifier because it is pretty tough to tell Sugar from Black without more clues. Sugar tends to be much more prevalent, so it is often assumed Hard maple is Sugar maple. Just for kicks, we could throw in Acer grandidentatum as well... though it would be far less common and is slower growing, so doesn't tend to get as large ..
They are essentially interchangeable for use of the wood.
