Hey,

I've been fixing up an old Stihl 051 that was missing a few parts when I got it. I thought I had replaced all the parts, but now I think I'm missing more near the crankshaft oil seal on the clutch side.

I had been trying to diagnose a significant air leak in the case, such that it wouldn't hold any pressure/vacuum. I did get it to start, but didn't run it much because of the fear of it running lean. I was about to go over the chainsaw with soapy water but I heard air coming out near the clutch and noticed that there seem to be pieces missing from that area.

From what I can tell, I think I need the oil pump worm and corresponding oil seal. Can you see any other parts in that area that I'd be missing in the pictures? (I'm a bit of a newbie at this, so I don't know if there's anything else I should be looking for). Also, would these missing parts, especially the oil seal, be the cause of my air leak? Or should I continue testing in that area?

The first picture shows the side of the chainsaw. The circular cover resting just above the crankshaft was over that hole, followed by the clutch/drum. The other pictures show closer views of the area.

Thanks!
Tyler

there is also a needle cage bearing and 2 washers/shims in clutch, the oil pump worm you need is the newer lug type(still available new in canada with seal). also, when i look at pic 2, there seems to be a crack in the oil seal at the 6:30 position...

worth you while to check out the oil pump too.

I just checked the oil seal that's on there, and there's no crack. It had some junk/dirt on it that I think gave it that appearance in the photo, but it looks nice once wiped off.

I have the needle cage bearings, shims, and everything else for the clutch/drum. It was just after I pulled that stuff off and got a little further in that I noticed that the oil pump worm was missing. Since I'll be working on this area, is there any value in just going ahead and replacing the oil seal that's on there? It looks to be in good condition.

I have the part number from my IPL for the oil pump worm (1111-640-7111). I assume that's the newer lug type you mentioned, djmercer1.

What should I check on the oil pump?

Thanks for the help!

thats the right oil pump worm number. in the pump there are several orings and a rubber ring that are known to cause trouble, i also replaced the orings on the oil flow control lever assembly.
