I have dozens of old fanno and snap cut 17" pole saw blades, and I was wondering about some good ideas for recycling them. I've used them for strengthening concrete, and as putty knives(not very good). Any suggestions?:)

I away thought that they would make pretty good filleting knives, but I havent tried making any yet. Ive made a few kitchen knives with old circular sawmill blades.
Many years ago I made a rather oversized letter opener out of a sawmill bandsaw blade. A mate 10 years ago saw it who was about to go on overseas service and took it with him.
Its been used to prod for mines in bosnia, cambodia and a few other little hell holes. He brought it back to me a little while back, criptically he said "dont worry, I got all the blood off it". I will try to find it to post a pic

Now you make me feel bad for tossing mine.

Show them to the right artist and they could make a work of art.

old pole saw blades

hello there , I make small knife out of the bottom cutting edge of old silky pole saw blades , one of the bolt holes doubles as a lanyard hole . Ill try to post a picture cheer's

used saw blades

Some minor welding (or brazing?) and drilling and you could have an interesting clock. Mechanisms are a couple of bucks for indoor use; more for outdoor use. Paint the numbers on, decorate the blades, whatever.......

Could be art-y as he!! Send me a dozen and I'll try one - I've been thinking about an outdoor clock for some time.

Probing for mines with something made of a ferrous metal? He's either a very lucky idiot or a liar.

Wonder how one would work for a bar groove cleaner ? After being modified of course. I've wondered more about what to do with used round files.

How thick are they? What would the dimensions be, as they are maybe something like an L-6 or a way cool crucible steel?

I do a lot of forging, live for it so to speak, if you have an idea for a blade, let me know and I will give it a try just for a few blanks? My methods are a little off the farm, but there is a chance that I could get them to shave hair?

They sound like my Apprentices would be all over them also, as the knifes they make out of horseshoes just don't cut it!

He has been to more war zones than I can count and is still alive and kicking. I would say that he is both lucky and an idiot. He would have probed using it, I know they didnt always have probes (or food, or radios that worked or boots that stayed in one piece etc etc etc)

Im going to have to have a search for that thing now!

Hello there Pbtree , sorry it's taken so long to get back to you I'm sending you the pic of the knife. I hope it work's out . The handle on this prototype is lime wood the other blade is the bottom end of a broken silky pole saw blade . Simply shape the blade with a grinding wheel keep the heat away from the cutting edge , cut a slot in the handle . One of the original holes becomes a lanyard hole drop in a piece of brass tube to lock it all together , fill in around the slot with epoxy (araldite) shape , sand , varnish knock up a sheath et voila ! It looks a bit like a poor man's emerson "la griffe" come semi karambit have fun . best regards

Well...

I leave my old blades about 10 feet up in a tree, so someone else can find it in the future :hmm3grin2orange: Just Kidding. Keep them for the stuff you don't wanna use your good blades for, like root pruning (ugh I hate that term) or for anything that would ruin a good blade.

Welcome Dan, keeping one around for root pruning is a good idea, but I do mostly girdling roots, difficult with curved blades except in some cases.

Agreed

I just hate to see things go to waste (I am a packrat.) Also what are stem girldling roots? we don't have that problem here...we plant our tees around a foot deep so the roots can't get to the tree ;D(sarcasm...)
