Definitely looks like shag on the outside, but the split wood screams red oak. Would be way stringier if it were shag. There should also be an odor that leaves little doubt.

Swamp White Oak (Quercus bicolor)

Remember this: Oaks hybridize.

Maybe even Bastard Oak. Look it up. I've a few on the property and the bark looks like what you've got.

The bark reminds me of pin oak. Haven't worked up much hickory in my time so can't say it ain't hick'ry... but it does resemble red oak.

Nope..and I'm no expert on Hickory as I've maybe burned 2-3 cords in the 20+ years of firewooding. To tell the truth I was just comparing pictures and thought the bark looked very simalar, maybe it splits better when cold outside?

It's NOT shag bark hickory. The bark on shag bark is not nearly that tight and there's no way you just slab it off with an axe like that.

Once in a Blue Moon I'll get a Hickory that will split OK with an ax. Usually, I put a piece of 2X6 on the foot of my splitter so it will pinch the last stringy piece off, Joe.
