I was alwas told the bigger the better
because it burns longer

would a 4 foot by 12 inch thick work in a fireplace if it fits
oak wood

4' by 12"? Did I read that right? You must have a huge fireplace. I am no expert but it would seem to me that might have a problem with sufficient airflow around that big of a chunk to keep it burning.

I was in a lodge of sorts in the high country of Colorado last year. They had a fireplace that I could stand up in. It was sunken and in a semi circle there was a cushion of sorts and everyone could just sit and enjoy. The log was three feet in diameter and 8' long. They used a fork lift in slid it in as it burned. They could get about half at a time into the fire and used smaller stuff to keep it going. Too big for me.

2ft x 2ft logs fits into my fireplace insert. but that's too heavy to lug around. usually keep it under 2ftx 12in.

my fireplace is huge without the insert...

Yep its not uncommon out here on the west coast. . Yes there are fire places out here on the west coast that can e-z accomadate the old 24" x14+ " Die. X 4 of them brought in on the hand truck. Most that you see are knock offs from the Cartrites Bonnaza style Donner party w/loads of surrounnding stone that stays heated for days. If you look closely there are remenents of europen design incorporated into the mantels to boot. Can you say Georga I knew you could . Hi
