When can I prune?

I just moved into a new house and with it came a few maple bushes...or at least they look like bushes. I want to give them a haircut but I was told to wait until the colder weather. Is this true? The trees are inly about 7-9 feet tall have reddish leaves and are as wide as they are tall.

Before we can give you good advice, we need to identify the shrubs. They could be anything from very valuable, slow growing Japanese Maples to junky Norway Maples growing up from old stumps. The type of care they should get is very different.
A picture of the plant and leaves should be all we need to get you on the right track.

definately need a picture! Mike is right you could make a HUGE mistake if you give a 9' Japanese Maple a "haircut"
